Tool #11

There are many new tools I have learned about by completing all of the modules. I plan to use many of the Web 2.0 tools in my lessons, especially for projects and stations. Some I plan to use are Wellwisher, Edmodo, Studyladder, Animoto, Xtranormal, Brainpop ESL, etc.
I have always tried to integrate technology in my classroom. Now that we will have devices to use in the classroom, it will be easier to use technology for lessons.
I didn't have an unexpected outcome, but really enjoyed seeing the variety of technological tools we can use and integrate into our lessons.

Tool #10

Internet safety and digital citizenship will be lessons I will present at the beginning of school, review before a project and re-visit after Spring Break.
Students need to be constantly reminded of internet safety and proper internet ettiquette. Too often I have found that students are very savvy on accessing websites that should be blocked. You have to set expectations right at the beginning about use of the internet. In the past, when I discover that a student is off task and is accessing bad websites, they lose their privilege of using the computer.
I will show them Brainpop video, ISafe and Digizen. I will try to find YouTube videos on internet safety and consequences that can occur if the internet is misused.
With regard to parents, I will send home a letter regarding use of internet and consequences if their student is misusing it.
I will also have students sign a contract stating that they will use the internet appropriately along with consequences of misuse.

Tool #9

Projects must be aligned to the lessons and curriculum or they won't make sense. I have my students use technology to create/synthesize the end objective, to conduct research, to practice a skill. I have also used computers as a station to work on a project, to watch videos to go along with a persuasive unit, for research, and for word processing.
It's extremely important to hold them accountable for each station so that you can assess their progress and to ensure that they do the work and aren't playing around. You can also see with what area they may be having difficulty.
As a teacher of newcomers, I plan to use many of the websites as a station. I will most likely use Studyladder and Learning Games for word study and vocabulary station.
With regard to IPAD apps, there are many I would use in my classroom for a station. For my newcomer social studies class I would use American Presidents, Daily history, Flashcards+ and Onthisday. For my newcomer language arts class and my regular language arts class I would use Brainpop, Comic Touch, Daily history, On this Day, Dragon Dictation (for SPED students), Flashcards+, WordWarp, gFlash and MacGenius Books.

Tool #8

I didn't realize that the IPod Touch and the netbooks have video capabilities nor did I know that the netbooks can support a microphone and that they have a place to put an SD card for photos. Do we have microphones for the netbooks?
I plan to use the devices in many different ways: in a station/center, for research, to create projects, for assessments such as WellWhisher and Poll Everywhere, Edmodo.

Tool #7

The 6th grade language arts teachers and I had discussed doing this last year by using Edmodo to create a discussion board about classroom novels we were going to read. We were going to connect them by genre, all of us were going to have the students read dystopian novels and post a thought provoking question each week to which they would have to respond. Unfortunately this did not get off the ground due to STARR concerns.

This next year I have several ideas for this tool.1st, for my newcomers, I can create a project for them where they can communicate with other newcomer classes in the district. It can begin with simple questions and then increase in rigor later in the school year when they feel more comfortable in their environment.
Objective: Given a topic or an idea, and using Edmodo, newcomer students will respond in English and or Spanish. We would probably collaborate with Sandy Z.'s newcomers at LMS.

I really enjoyed learning about other tools for quick assessments to use before, during or after a lesson. The 2 I have posted on my blog above were very easy to use. I really like WallWisher. It's easy and fun to use, plus it's colorful. Students can also add photos to their sticky notes/comments.
These tools can be used in so many ways: KWL, exit ticket, quick short answer response, etc. You can use them for a quick grade and keep students accountable for their learning.
I probably won't use Today's Meet though b/c the students could abuse this by not putting their names and therefore posting silly or inappropriate comments.

Tool 5

http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/7968093/some-rhetorical-fallacies This is an Xtranormal cartoon I made a couple of years ago to teach rhetorical fallacies. I've used it 2 years in a row. It was a lot of fun to make. My students really enjoyed the video and wanted to make their own. Unfortunately, Xtranormal is not free anymore.
The web tools displayed on the 11 Tools site seem to be a lot of fun and simple to use. With all of the curriculum that we have to cover, most of the tools are easy to use and won't take a lot of class time to make a presentation. We have used Prezi in class also for presentations. I had my students teach certain topics in science and social studies and many used Prezi and Animoto for their presentations. This coming year, I will definitely give them more choices from the list.

Tool #4

I really like this tool! I definitely plan to use it in the classroom to measure student progress and for reading responses. I had fun making a multiple choice quiz for fellow teachers. I embedded a YouTube video for them to view to use for their answers.
This can be used to share things with our teams. We get so busy sometimes to meet, so we can use this to share any documents, quizzes etc.with each other for use in the classroom.

Tool #3

Last school year I used Discovery Ed a lot because, besides teaching 6th grade language arts and newcomer language arts, I taught newcomer social studies and science. I found Discover Ed to be useful for visual purposes. In my regular language arts classes, I used YouTube videos to enhance specific curriculum topics such as dialect and tools used in advertising.
For our persuasive unit, I always use a video made by Bruce Goodner to explain different ways people try to persuade someone. See below. Last year I used a video of top 10 commercials and had the students analyze them for effectiveness.
With regard to copyright, I learned a lot about this subject when I was in T3 training. We were advised to steer away from letting students use ITunes songs due to copyright laws. Personally, I use Googe Images instead of Flickr because Flickr images tend to have more legal restraints.

Tool #2

PLN = Personal Learning Network. Help to expand your knowledge on topics that interest you. I subscribed to a literacy blog called Helloliteracy.blogspot . I was looking for blogs on using blogs for reading responses.

Voki!!!

With the help of my wonderful son Elliot, I was able to finally post a Voki on my blog! Yay! I was kind of pleased to see that he had difficulties with it too, so I don't feel so enept anymore.
He also helped me access my blog. Now I can post about the rest of the tools.

First tool

Today I figured out how to make a new blog. I had already made a blogspot earlier this school year, but never used it. I am planning on using blogs next school year in all my classes. Still trying to figure out how to upload a Voki. May need some help with that.
